Aimpoint MPS

The Aimpoint MPS (Multi-Purpose-Sight) is currently in it’s third generation of production.

As best I can tell, these were made in ~2001, with the second generation being released in 2003/2004.

Generally these are implemented on Machine Guns, Automatic Grenade Launchers, and other medium/heavy weaponry.

Specifications, per Jane’s Infantry Weapons 2002:

  • The Aimpoint MPS multipurpose sight unit is a precision electronic red point sight developed for military applications and suitable for all types of vehicle-mounted guns, light machine guns and light naval weapons. The MPS is fully adjustable, has a sharp red dot sighting point and is very rapid in use. The unit is parallax free and there is no need to centre the dot. Eye relief is unlimited. Mounting systems with integral range-finding capabilities are available for most weapon systems.
  • Power for the MPS is provided by a single 3 V, 2/3 A, 1,200 mAh lithium battery with a minimum battery life of 80 hours. An external 10 to 28 V DC power supply is optional.
  • The MPS unit is attached to the host weapon by four 0.25 in (63.5 mm), 28 pitch, machine screws. The maximum screw intrusion into the sight base is 23 mm.
  • Specifications
  • Length: 197 mm
  • Height: 87 mm
  • Width: 80 mm
  • Weight: 694 g
  • Objective lens diameter: 44 mm
  • Ocular lens diameter: 37.5 mm
  • Power supply: | x 3 V, 2/3 A, 1,200 mAh lithium battery Battery life: min, 80h

From what I can read about the specs of the second generation, the only changes were the addition of adjustable brightness including night vision compatible settings.

The third generation is simply too new (2007) to bother writing about.

Notice the lack of ‘front underside ring’. It is possible that the underside ring is indicative of generation, either Gen 1 or Gen 2. Hard to determine. My assumption is that the front ring acts as a sort of shock absorber against heavy recoiling weapons. The ‘MPS’ marking also shifts.

And that’s all I know about the thing!
