Today on: Abandoned Projects! I figured I would get a head start on Secret Santa. I had this idea that I thought would be cool, basically a wall decoration of the various AR15 full auto modifications. It would be a grid 2 wide, 3 high, each “cell” showing a different method in chronological order as a neat walk through history. [Standard Semi] [O.G. M16] [DIAS] [Lightning Link] [Swift Link / Coat Hangar] [Yankee Boogle] Each cell would have a printed lower, with printed, colored components, assembled and with a clear sheet replacing the wall of the FCG pocket to act as a viewing window inside the lower, like a cutaway gun. Each cell would have a name plate as well as the year of invention specified, and possibly other information on plates in relevant locations saying high vs low shelf, or SP1 vs FA BCG for example. A mockup is shown (although without all the additional plates and the mounting hardware to assemble the full 2×3 array) As a legal precaution, I would be doing the following for each.
- Modify the overall scale of the lower and all FA components so that dimensions do not match nor could be modified to function or fit real components
- Modify the relative scale of all dimensions so that even if it is measured, you cannot just apply a conversion figure to discover true dimensions
- Modify the lower to be unconvertable and unusable even if properly scaled, so as not to qualify as a firearm even in a theoretical sense
- Fill the entire FCG pocket with a curing resin that has greater strength than the printed colored plastic. This means that no one will even be able to touch or measure the components, but can still view. Because the resin would be stronger than the plastic, any attempt to break apart the resin to extract the components would result in the destruction of the components.
And here I am thinking, wow! What a bunch of work to get the ATF off my ass. And you know what? It’s still not enough. It will never be enough. Recent cases and events with the ATF have convinced me that literally nothing I can do here will be enough for them. Despite the fact that the relevant information is all online, free, and public record and public information, they still would have no issue with charging me because they just don’t give a shit. Even though what I would be giving as a gift would be, by every measure, infinitely more useless than a simple google search to get the real files and blueprints, which anyone can do. They can arrest and imprison me for this art piece knowing I didn’t actually break the law, simply to harass me, and they will suffer no consequences. Even if I end up victorious in a court case, that still means I have to fight a court case. I am very displeased with this because I think it could make a really cool wall decoration or set of desk ornaments. Oh well! I will just do something else for Secret Santa.
